Now that we have seen the symptoms of hormonal imbalance in our previous blog, we can move to the associated risks. Yes, that’s true. There are other health problems too, which can be related to hormonal issues after 45.
What are the health risks associated with hormonal issues after 45?
Hormones are in charge of various important functions in your body. The major areas controlled by hormones are metabolism, heart rate, growth and development, reproductive function, sleep cycles, mood, and stress levels. When these areas are affected due to hormone problems, they act as risk factors for other health issues. Even small changes in the hormone level can have a great impact on your health. Hence, there is a chance of an increased risk of other health conditions if you are experiencing hormonal issues after 45.
Hormonal problems can be a result of various existing health conditions. We have already seen this in our earlier blog on the causes of hormonal imbalance. Most of these causes and hormonal issues after 45 are interrelated and can turn into a vicious cycle.
Some of the associated health risks include;
Weight issues – As metabolism is affected, hormonal issues can cause changes in appetite and drastic weight changes. Excessive weight gain as well as sudden weight loss, both can increase your risk of health problems.
Diabetes – Hormonal issues after 45 can greatly affect your blood glucose metabolism. This can increase the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Thyroid – Similar to diabetes, affected metabolism in hormonal issues after 45 can also affect the thyroid function. Hence, it may also increase the risk of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism in some people.
Bone and joint problems – Hormonal issues with ageing can increase the risk of bone and joint problems too. Thyroid, parathyroid hormones, and oestrogen can affect calcium metabolism and increase the risk of osteoporosis. Similarly, the lack of testosterone can affect muscle mass and affect the strength of joints.
Nutritional deficiencies – Fluctuations in certain hormones can affect the absorption of certain nutrients, like calcium, magnesium, iron, and vitamins. This can cause nutritional deficiencies, which is a great health risk.
Increased Stress – While stress acts as one of the causes of hormone issues, it can also be a result of it. Hormonal fluctuations can affect stress hormones, which can result in increased stress, anxiety and emotional problems in some people.
Sleep Disturbances – Hormone changes can influence your sleep. Lack of sleep can affect immunity, concentration, and overall health, thus posing as a great health risk.
In some, the hormone issues or the medications used to treat these conditions are associated with health risks. However, with awareness and proper medical care, you can prevent or manage the associated health problems. In our next blog, we will discuss the diet and lifestyle changes to manage hormone problems and prevent associated health risks.
